UNIT-I
Placement of Shuddha and VikritSwaras on Shruties in ancient, medieval and modern period.
Study of 'Thaat'/'Mel' and its importance in music. Classification of 'Thaat' according to Pt. Bhatkhande and Pt. Vyankat Mukhi.
Evolution & development of Raga, Rag Lakshan, Rag Vargikaran. Study of RagaSamay-Siddhant.
UNIT-II
Origin of Music. Evolution and development of Indian Music during Ancient, Medieval and Modern period.
Classification of Instruments. Historical evolution of Veena, Sitar, Sarangi, Violin, Israj/Dilruba, Sarod, Santoor, Tabla, Pakhawaj and Flute.
General idea of the Instruments of Vedic Music.
UNIT-III
General Idea of main Classical Dances of India: Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri, Oddissi, Kuchipudi, Satriya and Mohiniattam.
Study of Gharana's of Instrumental Music.
General study of Instruments and musical compositions of Karnatak Music.
UNIT-IV
Elementary theory of sound.
Definition of Harmony, Melody, Homophony, Polyphony, Chord, Symphony, Counter points, Authentic and Plegalmodes.
Types of Scale- Diatonic, Chromatic and equally tempered Scale. Comparative study of Hindustani and Western Scale.
UNIT-V
Interrelationship of Music with other Fine Arts- Rag – Ragini Paintings, Dhyan of Ragas and others.
Principle of aesthetics and its relation to Indian Music. Raag & Ras. Rasa and its constituent elements- Sthayi, Vyabhichari, Vibhava and Anubhava.
General Knowledge of different Indian semi classical/Light Music forms-Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, Hori, Gazal, Bhajan.
